CAA Pet Insurance, underwritten by Northbridge and distributed with Pets Plus Us, offers comprehensive plans for Canadian pet owners, with Accident & Illness policies providing annual coverage limits of $7,500 or $15,000, and an Accident Only plan at $5,000, all with adjustable reimbursement rates (70–90%) and annual deductibles from $100 to $300. Customization is a core advantage, with optional Flex Care wellness coverage on the Accident & Illness plan and significant multi-pet, member (13.5%), and non-member (9%) discounts, placing CAA competitively against higher-priced unlimited coverage providers like Trupanion while standing out for flexibility and shorter waiting periods. CAA is well-suited to owners seeking broad protection for young or healthy pets, multi-pet households, or those managing chronic hereditary/breed-specific issues, as well as anyone prioritizing tailored reimbursement and deductible options. Northbridge’s strong presence in Canada and Pets Plus Us’s customer service result in efficient claims handling, online submission options, and processing times capped at 60 days; as of June 2024, there is no public Trustpilot rating for CAA Pet Insurance, but user feedback is generally very positive.

CAA Coverages

CAA, in partnership with Pets Plus Us, provides two flexible pet insurance plans: Accident Only and Accident & Illness, both with clear annual limits and customer-selected reimbursement rates (up to 90% for Accident & Illness, 80% for Accident Only).

The Accident & Illness plan covers veterinary, emergency, behavioural, and alternative therapies, medical devices, trip cancellation, lost/stolen pet, and end-of-life, while routine and dental care require the Flex Care add-on (not available on Accident Only). Notable strengths include short waiting periods (48h accident, 14 days illness), broad discounts (13.5% for members, 9% non-members, multi-pet), coverage for hereditary/breed conditions, and strong 24/7 support services via Blue Ribbon Benefits. Weaknesses are the lack of unlimited annual caps, rising deductibles with pet age, and the exclusion of routine/dental (without add-on) and pre-existing conditions.

Overall, CAA is positioned as a customizable mid- to upper-tier insurer with strong flexibility, ideal for owners wanting to tailor protection and service level.

Blue Ribbon Benefits and Additional Information

Good to know: The Blue Ribbon Benefits package (included free) gives you PetHelpFone 24/7, Compassionate Care Line, free pet magazine, and Pet Poison Helpline. Premium discounts (up to 13.5% for CAA members, 9% non-members, and up to 15% for multi-pet) are stackable. The Flex Care add-on (available on Accident & Illness) allows routine and dental coverage to be added for more complete protection. Deductibles increase with pet age, so premiums may be higher for senior animals. Applications and claims can be managed fully online or by phone/email.

CAA Exclusions

CAA’s pet insurance policy has standard exclusions such as pre-existing conditions, waiting periods, cosmetic, elective or experimental treatments, and routine or preventive care unless a Flex Care add-on is purchased.
Notably, dental care, wellness, and routine services are excluded by default, which may differ from some competitors that include certain preventive benefits in their core plans.
Risks related to pregnancy, breeding, and non-therapeutic food or supplements are also not covered. There are explicit exclusions for claims tied to risky or commercial animal activities, as well as any injuries from intentional harm or known preventable behaviour, which is capped at three similar incidents. Geographic coverage is limited to Canada and the U.S., and administrative fees, late claims, and pets not owned by the policyholder are also excluded.

CAA Prices

CAA positions itself as a competitive and flexible option in the Canadian pet insurance market, combining customizable reimbursement rates and deductibles with broad accident and illness coverage.

The inclusion of member and multi-pet discounts helps make plans more accessible, while the accident-only plan is especially affordable for basic coverage needs.

Routine and preventive care are only available as optional add-ons, which keeps the base price moderate compared to some more premium providers that include these as standard.

While coverage is comprehensive for most urgent and serious health issues, the lack of an unlimited coverage tier and the potential for rising deductibles with age place CAA in the mid-range, rather than the top, for price.

Overall, CAA appeals to pet owners seeking value for money and customizable coverage rather than ultra-premium or discount plans.

CAA Reimbursement Amounts: What to Expect

With CAA’s highest-tier Accident & Illness plan—including the Flex Care add-on—you benefit from very generous reimbursements. You only pay your chosen annual deductible and co-insurance; after that, CAA covers up to 90% of most eligible veterinary expenses, including preventive care.

✅ Example 1: Cruciate ligament repair surgery (major accident)
Total vet costs: $3,600 (consultation, imaging, surgery, medications)
Annual deductible selected: $100 (already met earlier this policy year)
90% reimbursement cover: $3,600 × 90% = $3,240
👉 You receive a reimbursement of $3,240.

ℹ️ Once the annual deductible is paid, you only pay your 10% co-insurance per bill until the annual coverage limit is reached.

✅ Example 2: Chronic illness—diabetes management (yearly)
Total vet costs: $1,800 (diagnostics, visits, insulin, supplies)
Less annual deductible (not yet met): $100
Reimbursable amount: $1,800 – $100 = $1,700
90% reimbursement: $1,700 × 90% = $1,530
👉 You receive a reimbursement of $1,530.

ℹ️ CAA applies the deductible once per year per pet; remaining costs split according to your reimbursement percentage.

✅ Example 3: Annual wellness exam and core vaccinations (preventive care, with Flex Care add-on)
Total vet costs: $260 (exam, vaccines)
Annual Flex Care deductible: $0 (preventive benefits are covered to the sublimit)
90% reimbursement if under annual sublimit: $260 × 90% = $234
👉 You receive a reimbursement of $234.

ℹ️ Flex Care reimburses routine and dental care up to an annual limit, as an extra complement to your main plan.

CAA Assistance

CAA’s assistance is notable for its inclusion of the Blue Ribbon Benefits suite, providing 24/7 access to a pet health advice line and a poison control service, which addresses urgent questions outside normal clinic hours.

However, there is no advance payment solution for vet bills; owners must pay out-of-pocket and await reimbursement.

Emergency vet transport or direct clinic coordination is not offered, limiting hands-on emergency help.

A mobile app for claims or service management is not promoted, and everything is handled through an online portal or by email.

International coverage is limited to Canada and the USA; services are not extended to other countries or for prolonged travel abroad.

We analyzed reviews from the sites listed above.

On the positive side, customers who subscribed to CAA for their pets often mention:

  • A useful 24/7 pet health hotline and poison control service adds value by assisting in emergencies when regular vets are unavailable.
  • Flexible reimbursement rates and plan customization are appreciated, giving policyholders more control over their coverage.
  • A relatively quick claims process by portal or email is regularly reported as being easy to use.

On the negative side:

  • A lack of unlimited coverage and rising deductibles with the pet’s age are frequently noted as drawbacks, especially for owners of elderly pets.
  • Routine and preventive care, including dental, are excluded by default and require an additional fee-based add-on, which leads to dissatisfaction.
  • No advance payment option or mobile app is available, obliging owners to pay veterinary costs up front and manage paperwork online.
  • Some policyholders see the absence of an international coverage option outside Canada and the USA as a limitation when traveling.

Conditions that arise during coverage, after any applicable waiting period, may be covered if not excluded. Always provide full medical history when you enroll.

Does CAA offer discounts if I insure more than one pet?

Yes, CAA offers multi-pet discounts for policyholders who insure multiple pets. You can receive up to 15% off premiums depending on the number of pets covered. Discounts are also available for CAA members and on certain add-ons. Ask for a quote to see the savings applied to your policy.
