Cumis, officially known as CUMIS Insurance Company, is a Canadian insurance provider specializing in credit union protection, insurance, and financial solutions.

There is no standalone Cumis disability insurance in Canada. Instead, it provides credit protection insurance that includes disability coverage as an optional rider or add-on to loans or lines of credit offered through their partner credit unions.

You can get coverage for:

  1. Total Disability: If you become unable to work due to illness or accident, you'll receive monthly benefits to help cover your loan or line of credit payments.
  2. Partial Disability: In some cases, you may receive partial benefits if you can only work part-time due to your disability.

Good to know

The maximum monthly benefit for total disability is typically around $3,000 and $1,500 for partial disability. Also, the coverage is only valid for the term of your loan or line of credit.

Who is eligible for Cumis disability insurance?

  1. You must be employed and have a regular income.
  2. You must be approved for a loan or line of credit from a participating credit union.
  3. There may be certain medical conditions that exclude you from coverage.

I was injured at work on February 05 2024 and have not healed enough yet to return to work Dr says it will be another two to three months before I can return to work My question is does my Cumis policy provide any short term benefits

Hello Duane,

Cumis disability insurance is often an optional rider tied to loans or credit lines through credit unions. Its purpose is usually to assist with loan payments if you're unable to work due to disability. However, for injuries sustained at work, benefits from workers' compensation would typically apply instead of your Cumis policy.

To confirm if your Cumis policy offers short-term benefits for your current situation, you'll need to review your policy documents. Coverage can vary depending on the type of loan and the options selected when the policy was issued. If unsure, contact Cumis or your credit union directly for clarification.

Additionally, make sure to file a claim with your employer's workers' compensation program to receive appropriate benefits for your work-related injury.
