[Map] The Price of a Beer in The 32 Countries Qualified for The 2022 Soccer World Cup
Every 4 years, the Soccer World Cup represents a peak in beer consumption in the 32 countries that are lucky enough to qualify. This year, for the first time since 1986, Canada is part of the event! So we wanted to know where our country stands compared to the other participating countries when it comes to beer prices.
Good to know
This map shows the indicative average prices of a 330mL bottle of Heineken, recorded in supermarkets and local stores where the sale of alcohol is authorized in the 32 countries qualified for the 2022 Soccer World Cup. Bars, hotels and restaurants are not taken into account. The values were taken at the beginning of November 2022.
Among the qualified countries, Canada is the 4th most expensive country regarding the price of a beer
Although soccer is not the most popular sport in Canada, the 3 matches in which our national team will participate during the World Cup will be an opportunity for many supporters to get together and celebrate. Unfortunately for Canadians, with $2.95 to pay on average at the supermarket for a 330mL Heineken bottle of beer, our country is the 4th most expensive in this area among the 32 qualified for the World Cup. We note in this ranking:
- At the very top, Qatar, where the supporters present for the World Cup will have to pay nearly $10 for a beer (or more likely around $20 for a beer bought at the bar of a hotel authorized to sell it)
- Then only Australia ($3.04) and the United States ($2.30) are still ahead of Canada
- On the other hand, European countries will benefit as a whole from a moderate beer price, between $1 and $2 depending on the country.
- Finally, Ghana is the country qualified for the 2022 World Cup where beer is the cheapest, with an average price of $0.83.

Why is beer so expensive in Qatar?
In Qatar, the heavy taxation applied to alcohol as well as the very restrictive sales restrictions in the country make it a rare product, which explains this high price level.
Europe is the continent where beer is the cheapest for this World Cup 2022
The five continents including the 32 countries qualified for the 2022 World Cup show some disparities in the average price of a beer. Indeed, as we can observe in the graph below, we notice:
- A $2.01 difference between the average price of beer in Asia ($3.50) and the average price of beer in Europe ($1.49). The beer price in Qatar weighs heavily in the balance for the Asian zone (almost $10) and contributes to this first position.
- North and Central America (United States, Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica) also has a fairly high price, with an average price for a 330mL supermarket Heineken at $2.55.
- In contrast, Europe represents the continent that offers the lowest average price for a 330mL Heineken for the 2022 World Cup: $1.49 on average.
Our methodology
In addition to its expert editorial line around insurance and financial products, HelloSafe covers broader topics relating to global consumption in Canada and around the world. Its aim is to decipher certain complex subjects for consumers and to provide everyone with the latest information. HelloSafe performs analyzes of consumption habits on the occasion of major events such as Valentine's Day, Halloween, Christmas or the Soccer World Cup.
In this study, HelloSafe indexed beer prices in the 32 FIFA World Cup-qualified countries by comparing the prices of a 330mL bottle of Heineken beer displayed in supermarkets and local stores that allow the sale of alcohol. The prices charged in bars, hotels and restaurants are therefore not taken into account. For this, HelloSafe relied on estimates provided by our team of editors and internal data analysts, and on public and official information provided by public sources such as Statista, Global Product Prices and Numbeo. The prices from these platforms were collected in mid-November, for each country for which data was available.
