[Survey] The pandemic has reduced the desire to travel for over 51% of Canadians

Since the beginning of the pandemic in February 2020, Canadians have had to deal with many travel restrictions. The HelloSafe team wanted to learn more about the travel intentions of Canadians two years after the beginning of Covid-19. We conducted a survey of 726 people on our website from February 22nd to March 7th. The results suggest that Covid-19 continues to have a lasting impact on Canadians' travel habits.

More than 80% of respondents say they haven't been out of the country for 2 years

81.3%

... Canadians haven't been out of Canada since the beginning of the pandemic

Only 18.7%

... Canadians have traveled outside of the country since the beginning of Covid-19

More than 80% of respondents have answered "No" to the question "Have you travelled out of the country since the beginning of the pandemic?". This figure illustrates how the pandemic has affected Canadians' trips with worldwide health restrictions that have often prevented or discouraged travel.

Only 48.7% of Canadians still have the same desire to travel as before Covid-19

While a great majority of Canadians is not been out of Canada since early 2020, Covid-19 also seems to have demotivated a large number of people to travel outside. 50.5% of respondents have answered "Yes" to the question "Overall, has Covid-19 decreased your desire to travel abroad?", as shown in the graph below:

Covid-19 seems to have a lasting effect on the Canadians' desire to travel abroad, probably due to the fear of still having to face health restrictions once at the destination.

40.8% of Canadians will not travel this year

The consequences of Covid-19 still seem likely to be felt throughout this year of 2022. This is what our survey shows since 40.8% of respondents say they haven't planned to go on vacation this year. As for those who want to travel, they are a large majority (more than 50%) that say they have planned a trip outside North America - the rest being divided between travelling within Canada or elsewhere in America.

The 3 most popular destinations for Canadians this year

During the survey, we gave respondents the opportunity to indicate the country where they planned to travel in 2022. Without surprise, the United States and Mexico came in the first places. This is almost certainly due to their close position to Canada and reduced restrictions. Then Italy is the next most popular country for Canadians. The interest in Italy suggests that Canadians are beginning to feel more comfortable travelling to European destinations.

Then come destinations such as the Dominican Republic, Cuba, France or North African countries (especially Algeria and Tunisia in particular).
